Image depicting how suphur dye looks.

A type of synthetic dye that is often used to color textiles, especially cotton fibers, is sulfur dye. These dyes can create very dark colors, especially in natural tones like black, brown, and olive green. The fabric is soaked in a dye bath with sulfur dye, reducing agents, and alkalis. The sulfur dye molecules change to a form that does not dissolve in water, and then they attach to the fiber's surface. This makes the color very resistant to fading. Sulfur dyes are popular in casual wear and denim industries because they can make unique, rough looks with great wash-down effects.
